Oct. 18--Rothenburg and Wurzburg
Rothenburg is a marvelous old walled city and the wall is the best preserved in all Germany. There are more than 2,000 local residents inside the old wall complex, sharing daily life with hundreds of thousands of tourists yearly. Talk about a love/hate relationship. We walked the city extensively. The views from the walls out into the countryside are awesome.
Part of the tour was lunch at a local restaurant where the owners make their own wine. Naturally, the main course was Bratwurst.
The second part of the day as we headed in the direction of the ship was a stop in Wurzburg. Our primary mission was to see the Wurzburg Palace. As we look back, we all were saying 'how could the rulers of the time build such extravagant buildings', but the reality of the times were far different then.
The ruling Prince/Bishop of the areas built these walled cities for both protection from the invading countries and as a means of employment for the local citizens. BUT, the Wurzburg Palace is WAY over the top with hundreds of rooms, each more opulent than the next. Truly something to see. No pictures allowed so what is below is only Rothenburg.
I write this blog on Oct. 21, our first full day in Prague. We have been plagued with terrible internet connections up until now.
